At a press dinner in New York on Monday, OpenAI's consumer product lead Adam Fry shared a number worth sitting with: the search queries running through ChatGPT now equal about one fifth of Google's volume. For context, Microsoft's CEO said during the 2023 antitrust trial that Bing held roughly 3 percent of the search market after more than a decade of trying. ChatGPT reached a fifth of Google's volume in about three years.

Two things about that number before you act on it. First, it is OpenAI's own count. Fry defined a search as any question that sends ChatGPT to the web, and he did not say where the Google total comes from. Second, searches are not visitors. Outside referral data still shows Google sending far more actual traffic to websites than ChatGPT does. Your next customer is still far more likely to click from Google than from a chatbot today.

Search volume as reported: OpenAI says ChatGPT now runs one fifth of Google's query volume. Microsoft's CEO put Bing at 3 percent of the market in 2023. OpenAI's figure is the company's own count and is not independently audited.

So why care? Because of how the answer arrives. A Google result is ten links and the customer picks one. A chatbot answer is one response that may name two businesses and explain why. If that response names your competitor, or describes your hours wrong, you lost demand you never saw and cannot measure in your analytics. Fry also confirmed OpenAI is expanding advertising inside ChatGPT, moving from plain links toward sponsored product images, which means a new paid channel is forming on top of the answers.

Watch the money too. OpenAI needs revenue ahead of a possible IPO early next year, and Fry told reporters the ads have not hurt usage, which is the company's own assessment. OpenAI said last month it will start showing sponsored product images inside ChatGPT answers, not just a name and a link. When the answer to best plumber near me can carry a paid placement, being described well by the free answer becomes more valuable, not less, and a new ad channel opens for whoever learns it first.

The practical move is not to rebuild anything. It is to look. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask: best pho near me, who installs heat pumps in Fort Lee, is this shop open Sundays. Note whether you appear, what is said about you, and which sources the answer leaned on. Then make sure those sources, your own site, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, carry correct hours, services and pricing, because the chatbot repeats whatever it finds. Finally, check where your website traffic comes from once a month. When chatbot referrals become visible in that list, the channel has matured for you, and not before.

What it means for operators (Jaden's take)

Ranking used to be the whole game: be one of the ten links. Now a growing share of customers never see links at all, they get one answer and act on it. My read: the winners in that world are the businesses the answer can describe confidently, with consistent name, hours, services and prices everywhere the model reads. Keep your Google presence strong, because it still sends most of the traffic. But add one habit this week: open a chatbot, ask for what you sell in your town, and read what comes back. If the answer is wrong about you, that is the new version of a wrong phone number in the phone book, and fixing the sources it read is the new version of calling the phone book company.
